Julius was the son of Mark and Rhonda Butler Carrington. He enlisted as a private at Flint, Michigan in Company E, 10th Regiment Michigan Infantry Feb. 7, 1862. He fought in the Battles of Corinth, MS, Stone's River, Antioch, and Missionary Ridge,TN. He was wounded at Antioch, TN. in the wrist and lost the end of a little finger. He also sustained a head wound and was discharged as 2nd Lieutenant, July 1, 1864, at Rossville, GA. After the war he and his brother, Erwin, ran a ship chandlery business in Port Huron, MI. Then then became an express messenger by boat between Forestville, MI and Toledo, OH. Moving to Cleveland, OH he took a job with Perry & Knight Lumber Dealers. Subsequent jobs included bookkeeper for Callister & Foster, 1869, and in 1878 secretary and treasurer of People's Gas & Light Company, a position which he held until 1899. Also, in 1892 he became a charter member of the Union Savings and Loan Co., where he served as director and executive board member.

Julius married Abbie McNeil, Dec. 13, 1876(June 8, 1850-Mar. 18, 1828). She was born in Oxford, NY, the daughter of Chas. and Mary J. Dennision McNeil, of CT. (Chas., 1814-1900, came to Cleveland in 1852 where he entered the lumber business.) To Julius and Abbie were born two daughters: Ann, who married J. W. Rebell, and Mary Belle, who remained single.

Julius and Abbie belonged to St. John's Episcopal, beginning in 1865, where Julius served as vestryman for a lengthy time.
