George A. Collins
George A. Collins served in Co. G, 29th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He was a resident of Laporte, Indiana, when he enlisted on September 12, 1861. He was mustered out on September 26, 1864.
The 29th Indiana Infantry was organized at Laporte, Indiana. The regiment was mustered in on August 27, 1861, and mustered out on December 2, 1865.
Mr. Collins was a member of the Colonel Baker Post No. 84 G.A.R. at Kalkaska, Michigan.
George A. Collins was born on August 21, 1843, in Laporte County, Indiana, the son of Zeb and Betsey (Birch) Collins. George married Mary L. Ballou about 1866. Mary was born about 1850 in Michigan, the daughter of Hozea and Julia (Clark) Ballou.
In 1880, the Collins family lived at Union, Laporte County, Indiana. They moved to Michigan after 1886. In 1900, George and Mary, and their two youngest children, lived in Benzie County, Michigan.
Eight children were known born to George and Mary Collins: John F., Simon P., George, David A., Catherine M., Mary Etta, Stewart, and Emma E.
John F. Collins was born on April 9, 1867, in Indiana. He died on February 28, 1904, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. He was survived by his wife Mary and four children: Della, Mable, Blanche and Early Collins.
Simon P. Collins was born in February 1870 in Indiana. He married Nellie Parham on June 18, 1896, at Three Oaks, Michigan. Nella was born in January 1872 in Michigan to Eugene and Anna (Lee) Parham. Simon and Nellie made their home in Berrien County. Children known born to them were Wave, Kenneth, Edward, Vera, and Harold.

Hattie was born in December 1879 in Michigan to Henry and May (Hutchinson) Smith. In 1920, George and Maud lived in Palermo, Oswego County, New York. Mary "Etta" Collins was born about 1879 in Indiana. She married Alfred Garceau on March 9, 1901, at St. Joseph, Michigan. Alfred was born about 1874 in Canada to Fred and Della (Williams) Garceau. In 1920, Etta was divorced and living in Muskegon, Michigan, with children, Maurice, age sixteen, and Evelyn, age seven. Her widowed mother, Mary Reynolds, also lived with her.
Stewart Collins was born about 1884 in Indiana. He married (1) Bessie Dolph on July 20, 1907, at Muskegon, Michigan. Bessie was born about 1887 in Michigan, the daughter of Frank Dolph. Stewart and Bessie lived in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1920, Stewart was divorced and living with his sister Etta Garceau, also divorced, in Muskegon. Stewart married (2) Marie Gustafson on November 11, 1924, at Muskegon. Marie was born about 1890 in Michigan to Frank and Christina (Peterson) Gustafson.
Emma E. Collins was born in March 1886 in Indiana.
Civil War veteran George A. Collins died on November 8, 1903, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. He is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan. A Civil War military headstone and a G.A.R. flag holder mark Mr. Collins' grave.
