Eleanor R. Blake
Eleanor Rutledge Blake, 86, passed away peacefully at her home at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. Mrs. Blake was the beloved wife of the late Dexter Barnes Blake for 57 years.
Born and raised in New Haven, Conn., Eleanor was the daughter of Arthur Edward and Myrtle Ford Rutledge. She attended the Wykeham Rise Preparatory School and Vassar College, where she received a B.A. in music and the arts in 1939.
Eleanor Blake and her husband raised five children in Bernardsville, N.J. During that time she was an active volunteer and member of St. Bernards Episcopal Church Altar Guild, the Friends of the Bernardsville Library, and the Somerset Hills League of Women Voters. She was a member of the Bernardsville Schools PTA, a Cub Scout den mother, and Girl Scout leader. Eleanor always found time to enrich the life of a needy family whether in her own community or elsewhere.
After Retiring to Orange, Va., in 1981, Eleanor was an active member of the Altar Guild of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She enjoyed researching her family genealogy and became a member of the Jack Jouett Chapter of the DAR. In 1990, Eleanor and Dexter Blake relocated to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville.
Eleanor expressed her artistic talents through her love of music, needlework, and painting. She designed a needlepoint kit of James Madison's home at Montpelier to benefit the Friends of Montpelier in Orange, Va. She had a lifelong interest in American history, art, and antiques.
In addition to her husband and parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her brother, Orrin Clark Rutledge. She leaves her children, Elizabeth Blake Muller, of Lake Wylie, S.C.; Dexter Barnes Blake, Jr., of Glens Falls, N.Y.; Ann Blake Georgi and her husband, Howard Georgi, of Cambridge, Mass.; Arthur Frederick Blake and his wife, Jody Blake, of Haddam, Conn.; and Carol Blake-Scott and her husband, Halsey Scott, of Crozet. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express its grateful thanks to the staff at Westminster Canterbury, especially the 3rd floor nursing staff, for their devoted and loving care during the past seven years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Westminster Canterbury Foundation or Hospice of the Piedmont.
Eleanor's family will greet friends at Hill & Wood Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. today. A service of thanksgiving and burial will take place at Grace Episcopal Church, Keswick, Va. on Monday, March 1, 2004, at 11 a.m.
