Brian Barrett (22) was shot to death in an internet love triangle gone wrong.

Who is Brian Barrett ?
A very bright young man with his whole life and the world in front of him. This kind caring person has always been there for many people, always had a smile for everyone.

The killing of Brian, the part-time factory worker who was a student at nearby Buffalo State College and an aspiring teacher, stunned the rural town of Lockport, where he had lived with his parents.

As with many relationships born on the Internet, this one started by a 47 year old co-worker, saying that he was an 22 year old Marine. His cyber-lover from West Virginia was also in her 40's, the police say, but she had adopted her 18 year old daughter's identity, including the younger woman's e-mail address and Web page, as her online personal.

Brian was drawn in by a co worker friend and ended up being the victim from two very dishonest liars, people playing out a love affair on the internet.

On Friday, just outside Buffalo, N.Y., Brian's shift at the Dynabrade power tool plant ended at 10 p.m. He climbed into his truck to head home, but before he could slip his key into the ignition, someone shot him at close range with a .30-caliber rifle.

Once the investigators talked to a few coworkers at the factory where Brain had been working part-time for the last four years, the outline of a likely scenario quickly came into focus. The 22-year-old seemed to have become the victim of a bizarre love triangle: He was likely killed by a man pretending to be someone he was not, obsessed with a woman pretending to be someone she was not.

"The uniqueness of this case is that everybody appeared to be misleading everybody else, and the whole situation which resulted in a violent death was unnecessary," said John J. DeFranks, Erie County's first deputy district attorney.

"Ironically, the only person telling the truth here was the victim Brian Barrett."
