Death: Feb. 4, 1959

Viola Marie Mourn was born on Feb 6, 1866 in Monroe, West Virginia, just after the American Civil War.

Her father was George Washington Mourn. He was born in Monroe as well in 1841, but it was part of Virginia at that time. George reportedly was forced into joining the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the war. He had strict anti-slavery sentiments, however and slipped away to join the Union Army. Her mother was Mary Frances Smith, also of Monroe. Her parents were Joseph and Susan Smith.

After the war, George and his family (including daughter Viola) left WV and headed west in a 3-horse team and wagon in 1868. After a 3-year delay in Boone Co, MO (due to an illness), they arrived in Valley, Reno, KS in 1871, where they were some of the earliest settlers in the area.

Viola married Frank Douglas Barnes. He died in 1914 and Viola married William H. Jewell. She died on Feb 4, 1959. Her daughter, Flossie Elvina Barnes-Curless-Hendrix was my great-grandmother.
