Nahum Amos Parkhurst was born 2 Feb 1805 in Fairfield, Herkimer County, NY to Nahum and Abigail Parkhurst. He married Roxana Ashley in 1829 in Mayville, Chautauqua County, NY. They had five children, the first three born in Mayville. In 1835 they moved west and were some of the first settlers in Kendall County, purchasing land on Route 71 near Oswego.

Nahum was probably one of the 109 settlers who signed the petition, in the fall of 1840, to form Kendall County. "The 109 settlers who signed that first petition to form Kendall County probably never dreamed their beautiful prairies would be one day studded with subdivisions..." Kendall County History

Nahum Parkhurst was one of the constituent members of The Oswego Baptist Church that was organized May 24, 1848. He was also a member of the Old Settlers Club.

One of Nahum and Roxana's children, Reuben, gave up his life helping our country end slavery during the Civil War, he died in Youngs Point, Mississippi in 1863. He was honored on the State of Illinois memorial, erected in the National Military Park at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on October 25, 1906.

Nahum passed away 12 Jan 1875, "....he was one of the old settlers, a hard worker and one of the most peaceable citizens; a strict adherent to the Christian faith according to the doctrine of the Baptist Church, of which he was a member." Kendall County Record

Interesting ancestry: Nahum is the 16th great grandson of Edward I Longshanks, King of England; 26th great grandson of Alfred the Great and the 29th great grandson of Charlemagne.
