Phillip Harrison Carroll was the son of George and Mary Carroll. George was born in Ireland c. 1790 and Mary was born in North Carolina c. 1798. Their first child to be born in Tennessee was William, thus, they were in Tennessee by 1830. The family had moved to Campbell County by the time of the 1850 census:

Harrison and his brother William both fought for the Union in Co. C, 1st Regiment East Tennessee Infantry. William had served just over four months at the time of his death, leaving a widow and 5 children.
In regard to the identity of their parents, John Jones, M.D., gave an affidavit in the widow's pension file of his brother's wife, on July 25, 1889. Excerpt follows:
"The claimant's husband was named William Carroll. I KNEW HIS FATHER, GEO CARROLL, AN IRISHMAN, HIS MOTHER AND ALL THE FAMILY."
Dr. Jones also gave testimony, he gave several affidavits over a period of years, that he did not treat George Carroll as George had died before he began to practice medicine in 1854.
Harrison returned home to Campbell County after the War and soon married Mary Amanda Rogers on December 6, 1868. Mary's family was among the first families of Claiborne County. She was the 4th generation of Rogers to live there.
Mary and Harrison moved to Missouri and settled in Crawford County where they raised their family. They had three children to live to adulthood and have families of their own: Lida, George and Lizzie.
