Monday, March 26, 2012

Carol Don McBiles (Don) rests in peace since March 13, 2012. He was 79 years old, a third generation Arizonan, born in Florence, Ariz. on Feb. 19, 1933, to Mike and Violet McBiles.

The family moved to Carlsbad, N.M., where Don attended grade school and graduated Carlsbad High School.

He attended Arizona State College (ASU) briefly and entered the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He attained the rank of staff sergeant.

He married Marlys Ann Simons of Phoenix in 1953; they recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. He was the father of Mike, Mauri Donn, Patrick and Kathleen, all of whom he was exceedingly proud. He liked to brag of their many accomplishments in medicine and engineering.

Don received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Texas Technological College and a Master's Degree in the same field of study from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He held many fraternal honorary awards and patent awards for electrical design. He helped design command systems for deep space programs - Voyager, Apollo, Nike-Zeus and Mariner, to name a few. He was an employee of Motorola for 33 years where he was known as "Mr. DAMA" (Demand Assigned Multiple Access) for his design of a satellite communications system still in use by the Navy and on the battlefields.

Upon retirement, he moved from Paradise Valley, Ariz., to Hassayampa in Prescott. He loved this community and was active in Hassayampa and Alpine Villas Homeowners' Associations, Prescott/Caborca Sister City
organization, enjoyed playing bridge with fellow Prescottonians at the Senior Center and relished being a citizen of Prescott, enjoying its lifestyle and the people who live here.

His wife, four children, their spouses and 10 grandchildren survive him.

A funeral mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, interment with military honors at Prescott Veterans National Cemetery and a celebration of his life will be at the Hassayampa Golf Club on May 26, 2012.
