From Jan Bos
T/5 Peter M. Berkowicz was a soldier in the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. He was killed on 3 August 1943 in Sicily. T/5 Berkowicz was buried in the temporary American GELA Cemetery in grave D-42-501 on 4 August 1943. After the war his remains were repatriated and buried in the City Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, Il.
Over 1,200 men and women were buried in the GELA Cemetery between 1943-1947. I am writing a book about the GELA Cemetery and hope to finish it next year, 2013.
