Leo Eugene Barber, 87 of Pascagoula, MS passed away on Friday, June 1, 2012 in Moss Point. He was born on March 11, 1925 to the late Benjamin A. and Alice (Proulx) Barber in West Warwick, Rhode Island.
He was a former Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula. Mr. Barber was a proud member of the United States Navy from 1943 until his Honorable discharge in 1954. Parts of his years in service were spent as a diver involved in the recovery of Navy planes and submarines. A notable experience for Mr. Barber was his work on the Normandy, the giant liner that overturned at its dock in the New York Harbor. During his service, Leo Eugene Barber was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal. Mr. Barber was also a member of the Elks Lodge of Pascagoula, American Legion Post 160 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 15025.
In addition to his parents Mr. Barber was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Barber of West Warwick, RI and brothers, Arthur and Roland Barber both of Coventry, RI.
He is survived by his wife Doris Barber of Pascagoula, MS; children, Wayne (Dianne) Barber of Brown Summit, NC, Joe Barber of Groton, CT and Lisa (Tim) Mayes of Abilene, TX; brothers, Dr. Paul (Barbara) Barber of West Warwick, RI and Dr. Albert (Lynn) Barber of Middleburg, VA; stepchildren, Larry A. (Patty) Smith of Moss Point, Don V. Smith of Pascagoula, Laura (Sal) Riccardi of Huntsville, AL and Michael A. (Rebecca) Smith of Ocean Springs, MS. Mr. Barber will also be missed by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula. Funeral service will follow at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Matt Mitchell officiating. Entombment will follow at Jackson County Memorial Park in Pascagoula with Judge Robert Krebs, Larry A. Smith, Don V. Smith, Michael A. Smith, Austin Smith and Daniel Lawrence serving as pallbearers. Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS is in charge of arrangements.
