Annie Bertha Gilardine
Annie Bertha Gilardine, 102, died Nov. 28, 1991, at Canyon Hills Manor.
She was born Sept. 5, 1889, at Clark City, Ill. to Joseph and Nellie Larson Volkel. She was raised in Ladd, Ill., and went to work at age 12 to assist the family.
She married Tony Perona in Illinois in 1908. Her father died a month after the marriage, and her husband was killed later the same year before the birth of her only daughter.
She moned to Wisconsin and married Joseph Gilardine in Sheboygan in 1918. Mr. Gilardine was an electrician, and they moved west in search of work. They lived in South Dakota and Sheridan, before coming to Thermopolis, in 1932. They lived on a doctor's farm in Wind River Canyon, caring for the animals. Later they moved into town where Mrs. Gilardine cleaned houses and took in laundry. She worked as a cleaning woman for Dr. Benjamin Gitlitz for 27 years.
Mrs. Gilardine was a membert of St. Francis Catholic Church and a life member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking and reading.
Survivors include a daughter, Matilda Perona of Thermopolis; a brother, William Volkel; two grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at Mortimore funeral Home with Fr. Vincent Bauer of St. Francis Catholic Church officiating. Burial was a Monument Hill Cemetery.
