George "Jake" LaPrade Jr., 82, died unexpectedly in his sleep Saturday at the Park Place Nursing Home in Hyde Park. Jake was born in Bridgewater, May 2, 1929. He attended school and was a lifelong resident in the town of Bridgewater. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and worked in construction and helped build the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Brockton. He also worked in the cranberry industry and owned his own business. He was an avid gardener and was well-known around town for his butter and sugar corn. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and was a pilot. He loved to fly both in a Piper Cub and later in life, model planes. A lover of animals, he had many pets. Jake built his own home next to the one he grew up in on Auburn Street with the help of his father and brother. He was the loving father of Mrs. Joseph (Marion) Rosenfield of Bridgewater and Joanne Farnham of Bridgewater and Quincy. He was the son of the late George H. Sr. and Clara M. (Pfrang) LaPrade of Bridgewater; brother to Mrs. William (Elsie) Wood of Halifax and the late Mrs. Florindo (Christine) Balboni of West Bridgewater, Bernice Robbins of Carver and Richard C. LaPrade Sr. of Bridgewater. Fondly remembered as Grandpa Jake by his grandchildren, Joseph III, Andrew, Joshua, Crystal Rosenfield and Richard Farnham, all of Bridgewater. He was great-Grandpa Jake to Dustin and Marissa Rosenfield; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Funeral at the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St., Bridgewater, Thursday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m., followed by a burial at Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Bridgewater. Friends and family are invited to a visitation period Wednesday evening from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Jake to the Standish Humane Society, P.O. Box 634, Duxbury, MA 02331.
