Samuel Joy Clayton (J.C.) was born in Audubon/Alvord, Wise County, Texas. He was called Joy as a child - and used that name through high school until his older brother, Huse, married Joye Mills - then there were two Joy/Joye Bralys in Tulia - so he switched to his initials. He graduated from Tulia High School and Texas Tech University - and used that Engineering Degree to design and build oil-pipelines throughout Southwest United States, Mexico and Venezuela's Lake Maricaibo. He worked for Shell Oil most of his lifetime, and only retired when health problems common with aging began to develop.

He married Elizabeth Fuqua in Oklahoma in 1943 and that marriage ended in 1953. He had no children - and requested his ashes be returned to Tulia for burial in the Braly Family Plot at Rose Hill Cemetery.
