Robert Welsh's father, James, died in 1754 when he was three years old. According to the will, Robert inherited 2/3 of all of his father's land and personal estate. Shortly after his father's death, Robert moved with his mother, Mary, from Chester County, Pennsylvania to Port Deposit, Cecil County, Maryland. He married Mary Caldwell there. They moved to western Pennsylvania just after the Revolution and settled in Hopewell Township. Robert was a tailor.
