My dad taught school at the Pleasant View Grade School for a year after graduating high school. This was the school that he and his brothers and sisters had attended that was about 2 1/2 miles from their home. He and my mother met at the Security Benefit Life Insurance Company where they both worked. When they married, my mother had to quit since spouses were not allowed to work together. He bought the farm on Seward Avenue from Mrs. Weaver in 1940. When the 1951 flood ravaged our farm it cost my father more that what he had originally paid for the farm to restore it. He was a very smart man. He always said except for a home, if you can't pay cash for something, you can not afford it. You saved your money till you could afford it. He also opened his home to many family members when they were facing hard times and made a home for his mother and father until they died. He was much loved by his family.
