Vet J.E. Crook Answers Great
Commander’s Call.
Heeding the summons of the Great Commander’s call, Confederate Veteran James E. Crook wended his way to the eternal encampment Sunday afternoon last about 5 o’clock following a stroke of paralysis about seven o’clock that morning up to which time his physical condition was remarkably good for one of his age, his death occurring at his home near Potterville, in this county.
Mr. Crook was born in Lincoln county in 1846 and came to this section of the state when a young man, residing part of the time in Schley county and many of the latter years of his life in Taylor county. He was happily married in early manhood to Miss Melissa Gaultney who survives him as does also thirteen children born to this union, and blessed with the fact that there has never been a death in the family previous to the passing of this beloved saint.
Mr. Crook was a consistent member of Pleasant Grove Baptist church at Garden Valley and where funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock, the services being conducted by Rev. M. T. Gaultney, assisted by Rev. W. H. Emerson. As a testimony to the high esteem in which Mr. Crook was held a very large crowd attended the funeral services, all sections of the county being well represented.
Six sons of the deceased were numbered among the active pallbearers, while the honorary pallbearers included the following grandsons: Messrs. Dennis Crook of Fort Valley; M. L. Crook, Hartford, Ala.; Cecil Perry, Cordele; M. J. and Purvis Crook, Reynolds. The following grand-daughters were flower bearers: Misses Pearl and Gussie Mae Crook, Hartford, Ala.; Myrtice Crook, Marshallville; Irma Gene Crook, Plains.
Mr. G. H. Goddard of the Goddard undertaking establishment of Reynolds was in charge of the remains.
Besides the aged and devoted companion of Mr. Crook surviving him are the following children: A. J. Crook of Hartford, Ala; M. I. and L. J. Crook, Montezuma; J. T. Crook, Moultrie; C. B. Crook, Plains; J. L. Crook, Andersonville; J. G. and H. B. Crook, Marshallville; M. L. Crook, Potterville; Mrs. N. W. Fulford of this county; Mrs. W. R. Rooks, Americus; and Mrs. W. W. Ferry, Cordele; and a large number of grand-children.
