Witnesses to Jean "John" Adam Schlemmers birth in Erckartswiller, Alsace, France, were Georges Schmitt and Chretien Helmlinger. John, as he was called, immigrated with his parents and siblings to Ohio in 1834. Before 1839 they moved to Indiana and settled near Monroeville, IN. He married Mary Ann Shäffer on April 14, 1857, and lived on property next to his father. The records of St. John's Lutheran Church at Flatrock indicate that he became a member of that church via a letter dated 7 March 1859. The Monroe Township, Allen County, IN Deed Index lists Jno. A. as selling his property on 5/7/1859 to Henry Shäffer, his brother-in-law ( Y 171). He also sold property May 7, 1860, (Y 538) and April 5, 1864(Y 548). He had four children, Sarah and Peter are buried by him. The other two are buried in Oklahoma. Civil war records show that he enlisted on October 20, 1864. Records say he mustered out 19 Feb 1865 at Nashville, TN, as he was killed that day. His body was brought back to Indiana and buried in Flat Rock Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Allen County. This old church and cemetery stood at the corner of Hoagland and Morgan Roads. The church records were turned over and stored in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Monroeville. It is also in the ACPL. It is interesting that Jean "John" was the first of his family to be recorded as belonging to a church. If the earlier church did, indeed, exist, the family may have been members there, as they were devout Lutherans both in France and the US. Jean John Adam's surname was often spelled "Slamer." The difference in spelling meant nothing, as various spellings for early settlers are extremely common. Spellings in the US were not standard yet and the writer most often wrote what they heard. This only caused confusion for the later genealogists. Mary Ann, her parents and two surviving children moved to Missouri after Jean Adam's death and the spelling followed them there. His tombstone also stands with the name "Slammer." A myriad other spellings were also used. The original spelling in the Church Records of Apollonia Lutheran Church in Erckartswiller, Alsace Lorraine, France, is Schlemmer. All of my information about the family is gotten from original sources. by Dolly Kikuchi (A Schlemmer descendant)
