Architect, Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He was a prominent figure in pre-Civil War architecture and design, being responsible for numerous buildings in Maryland and Washington, DC. After the Civil War started he joined thr Confederate Army, becoming Captain and commander of the 1st Maryland (Confederate) Light Artillery Battery. He was later promoted to Major and was placed in charge of a divisional artillery in Brigadier General Charles S. Winder's Army of Northern Virginia Division. He was severely wounded by an artillery shell at the August 1862 Battle of Cedar Mountain, and again at the June 1863 2nd Battle of Winchester. He recovered from his wounds, received a promotion to Colonel and was assigned as an envoy to Prussia to secure arms for the Confederacy. He was successful in his mission, but the war ended before he could get them back to America. His father, Timothy Patrick Andrews, was a career United States Army officer who remained loyal to United States, and received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General. A cenotaph for Richard Snowden Andrews was placed in the family plot in Washington, DC's Rock Creek Cemetery
