James was the oldest child of Antonio and Catterina Macono Giacoma-Rosa. James died on the night of his 36th birthday.

James arrived in New York City on February 13, 1893 aboard the La Bourgogne sailing from Le Havre, France.

He was on his way home that evening on a horse. Just outside the Eureka Cemetery the horse he was riding assumed to have stumbled. James was smoking a pipe at the time. As a result of the horse falling, James swallowed the pipe and broke his neck and died. James was not found until the next morning. James was married to Carlotta Enrietti in Osegna, Italy on April 6, 1891. They had a daughter, Victoria Rosa Caffar (Jan 7, 1898 - ???) husband Lewis Patrick Caffar (May 15, 1894 - Sept 9, 1941) and two sons, Anton Frank Rosa (Jan 1, 1892 - Oct 19, 1949) and Lewis Rosa (Dec 5, 1895 - June 1, 1958). Both Anton and Lewis are buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah. Carlotta moved to Salt Lake City, Utah (Hunter, Utah) and remarried to Peter Bertin (Bertini). Carlotta had a son and daughter from Peter Bertin. Carlotta Bertin died December 18, 1911 and is buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah.
James had three brothers, Mike (Eureka, Utah), John (Eureka/Salt Lake City, Utah), Felix (Bingham Canyon, Utah, Osegna, Italy) and two sisters, Maria Nigro (Osegna, Italy) Albina Ariotti (Helper, Utah)
