Peter was the son of Nicholas and Magdalena (Endus) Schmitt, both born in Germany. Peter came to Dubuque as a young man and was employed for 34 years with the Milwaukee Road as a pump repair man on the D & I Second District. He retired Dec. 1, 1949. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and of the Retired Railroad Workers. Peter married Bertha Clara Johnson in Davenport, IA on 1/9/1914. They had two sons - William and Kenneth - and one daughter, Rose. Kenneth preceeded him in death. His wife at the time of his death was Mae Alvina (Lightfoot) Schmitt. He died at Xavier Hospital in Dubuque of lung cancer.
