John H. Bailey Jr., 98, of Harriman, died Monday, April 21, 2008.

Known as Johnny to his family and close friends, he was born in 1909 in Johnson City, the son of Mary Etta and John H. Bailey Sr., both of whom preceded him in death. Some time later, the family moved to Indianapolis, where he enjoyed ice skating and gymnastics as a youngster. As a teenager in a family of nine children, he left home to find work. He worked in Texas and then traveled to Florida, where he lived for a few years and learned the printing trade.

He joined his family when they moved to Harriman and bought a neighborhood grocery store from his father, which he and his wife operated until 1956. He also sold life insurance and worked at the K-25 Site for a short time.

Around age 40, he learned the building trade and began building and renovating houses. He also became a skilled cabinet maker. He taught the general trades class at Roane County High School for a few years before retirement age.

He formerly sang in the Harriman First Christian Church choir and in a barbershop quartet. He played tennis and golf and was active in the Harriman Garden Club. He raised beautiful flowers at his home, with the help of Jim Brock. An avid reader with an inquisitive and intelligent mind, he especially enjoyed playing Scrabble with his daughters.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Stanifer Bailey, whom he married in 1932; and son-in-law, Jim Estes.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law Pat Estes of Harriman and Julianne Bailey Brown and Bob Brown of Kingston; grandchildren and spouses, Darin and Angela Estes of Knoxville, Kelli Gilliland Klidzejs of Manchester and Major John E. and Cindy Gilliland of Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; great-grandchildren, Connor Estes and Ben Estes, both of Knoxville, Dylan Gilliland of Eglin Air Force Base, and Erin and Shawn of Memphis; stepgranddaughters and stepgrandson-in-law, Jennifer Brown of Johnson City and Elizabeth B. and Tim Seaton of Knoxville; stepgreat-granddaughter, Brynn Seaton of Knoxville; sister, Mary Bailey Turley of Winter Haven, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and burial were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Willard Park Cemetery, Harriman, with Jesse Rittenhouse officiating. Kyker Funeral Home, Harriman, was in charge of arrangements.
