Dr. Paul Judson Kirk Jr., age 86, of St. Louis died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Alexian Brothers Lansdowne Village in St. Louis.

Born Jan. 23, 1924 in Shawnee OK, the son of Paul Judson, Sr. and Moddie (Gibson) Kirk, Jud grew up in Duncan and Oklahoma City. In high school, he won national awards for his skills on French horn and tuba. Following graduation, Jud served from Dec. 10. 1942 until March 31, 1946 in the US Army Air Corps Band, performing throughout the US, Canada and Europe.

Jud Kirk earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice at Oklahoma Baptist University in 1949, then earned a Masters Degree in French Horn from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and later a Doctorate in Music from the University of Colorado.

In 1951, he appeared in the film Jim Thorpe, All-American, portraying a band leader.

Dr. Kirk's career highlights include serving as Instrumental Music Chairman at Oklahoma Baptist University, Assistant Band Director at University of Colorado at Boulder, and as Music Professor at Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau and Maryville University in St. Louis. He also served as Music Director and Chairman of the Board of Deacons at First Presbyterian Church of Cape Girardeau for many years.

Over the years, Dr. Kirk amassed a remarkable collection of antique musical instruments, mostly low brass, and he restored many of them himself. His other interests included photography, jewelry-making, woodworking, and the restoration of the Kirks' historic home in the Central West End of St. Louis.

The following anthem was sung at Dr. Kirk's funeral service. It reflected so well his spirit and his life:

When in our music God is glorified,
And adoration leaves no room for pride,
It is as though the whole creation cried
Alleluia!

How often, making music, we have found
A new dimension in the world of sound,
As worship moved us to a more profound
Alleluia!

So has the Church, in liturgy and song,
In faith and love, through centuries of wrong
Borne witness to the truth in every tongue.
Alleluia!

And did not Jesus sing a psalm that night
When utmost evil strove against the Light?
Then let us sing, for whom He won the fight:
Alleluia!

Let every instrument be tuned for praise!
Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise!
And may God give us faith to sing always:
Alleluia!
