NEWPORT NEWS — Shirley May Cawthon, 71, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday, Sept. 16, 2002. Born in Gloucester, she had been a longtime Peninsula resident.

Mrs. Cawthon was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry L. Cawthon Sr., and her son, Harry L. Cawthon Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Cawthon Higgins and her husband, Mark, of Newport News; a brother, Archer Brown; four sisters, Peggy McCormick, Bettie Pherson, Doris Hall, and Janette Hudson; her four grandchildren, Ashley, Greer, Brooke and Kristin; and her great-granddaughter, Brianna.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Weymouth Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, by Clarence Hilling in Peninsula Memorial Park. The family would especially like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Riverside Hospice for their special care for Shirley during her illness
