Rodger Pierpont Fitzgerald, 83, a longtime and well-loved teacher and guidance counselor for Prince William County schools, died June 21 of a stroke.
Fitzgerald was married to Fannie Wilkinson Fitzgerald, one of the county's "Courageous Four" who integrated all-white schools in 1964, and was the father of Olympic gold medalist Benita Fitzgerald Mosley.
Fitzgerald was born on Oct. 29, 1929, on Buchanan Street in Richmond, the sixth of eight children, Mosley wrote in an obituary for her father.
He was the son of Rev. David Jones Fitzgerald Sr., a tailor and Baptist minister, and Gertrude Randall Harris Fitzgerald, a school teacher and homemaker. Fitzgerald was an Air Force veteran who fought in the Korean War.
He graduated from Virginia Union University in 1955 with a degree in math and science, and received his master's degree in guidance and counseling from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1973.
He married Fannie Beatrice Wilkinson on June 14, 1959. He leaves behind his wife and daughters Mosley and Kim Fitzgerald Lennon.
Fitzgerald's career as an educator spanned 35 years in the Prince William School system. He taught math and science at the segregated Jennie Dean High School, where he also served as a dormitory supervisor. He then worked for 29 years at Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge as a math teacher and guidance counselor.
"He helped enrich the lives and careers of thousands of students with his positive attitude and ‘glass half full' approach to life," Mosley wrote.
Fitzgerald was born the month of the stock market crash that led to the Great Depression, but his daughter said he was financially self-sufficient from the age of 10.
"He funded his own college education, and provided a great living for his wife and family," she wrote.
He was also known as a humanitarian and community leader, serving as a board member and officer for the Lions Club, the Boys & Girls Club, the Prince William Symphony Orchestra, the Dale City Sanitary District Advisory Committee and Northern Virginia Community College. He also was a member of First Mount Zion Baptist Church and tutored students as part of the Academic Education Ministry.
Mosley said Fitzgerald loved music and passed that love on to his daughters and grandchildren. He was also a nature lover, gardener, birder and world-traveler. In 1994, he met his life goal of visiting all seven continents.
In addition to his wife of 54 years and his two daughters, Fitzgerald is also survived by four grandchildren: Isaiah and Maya Mosley and twins Antoinette and Olivia Lennon, as well as a brother, two sisters and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday at noon at First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries. A homegoing service follows at 1 p.m. officiated by the church pastor, state Del. Luke Torian.
Interment takes place at 1 p.m. July 3 at Quantico National Cemetery.
"We will carry the memory of our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, counselor and friend in our hearts forever," Mosley wrote.
