Died in the 106th year of his age

According to an obituary notice published in the Daily Picayune (New Orleans, Louisiana) dated June 20, 1849, and in the Emancipator and Republican (Boston, Massachusetts) dated June 28, 1849, John died on June 2, 1849.

Note: Some members of this family spelled their
name as Bernhiser.


Served in the Fifth Pennsylvania Regiment, enlisting in 1776 at Reading, Pennsylvania and serving under Captain John Spoon and Colonel Magan for a period of one year

Participated in the Battle of Long Island

Taken prisoner at Fort Washington and carried to New York where he was confined for several months until he was eventually paroled

After his parole, he volunteered for six months to fight Indians under General Gowatch

In 1782, he re-enlisted at Reading, Pennsylvania in the Sixth Pennsylvania Regiment under Colonel Butler for seven months

He was later discharged at Pennytown or Pennington (in New York or New Jersey)
