Joseph was born in Germany in 1832. He married and had one son, Jacob. His wife died and he was remarried to Margaret. He arrived in the United States on May 27, 1867 with his wife and son. They eventually settled in Alton, Ia. where they went on to have 10 more children 4 of whom did not survive. The surviving children were: Cecelia, Kate, Lena, Anna, Margaret and Lewis, and Jacob.
