Commissary Sergeant Amos Jefferson Custard was born 24 Dec 1827 at 3:00 A.M. in Mead Twp., Crawford Co., Pennsylvania, USA. Amos married Rose Geelan September 8, 1853 in Crawford Co., Pennsylvania, USA. He was killed in battle on July 26, 1865 at the Battle of Red Buttes when his supply train was attacked by Cheyenne and Lakota Sioux Indians. Original burial location unknown. Amos and his men were disinterred in fall of 1899 from original burial site and reburied at Fort D.A. Russell (Francis E. Warren Air Force Base) cemetery.

Excerpt from page 19: In the introduction of the book, "Custer and Company: Walter Camp's notes on the Custer fight", General William C. Brown on November 10, 1927 wrote to Robert Ellison that he was going to be stuck with the tombstones as he recently discovered that the remains for Sergeant Custard's detachment of the 11th Kansas had been disinterred from their burial site in the fall of 1899 and sent for reburial at Fort D.A. Russell. Fort D.A. Russell is now known as Francis E. Warren Air Force Base

Sgt Custard was in charge of a military wagon train, when it was attacked by an overwhelming number of Lakota & Cheyenee warriors near the Platte Bridge Station (present day Casper Wy). Custard was able to corral the wagons and with 20 soldiers fought bac...(Read more)
