Joe built five baseball fields and two softball fields, one of which was named Joe Gabe Field in his honor. At the 1994 Henderson Hall of Fame sports banquet during which the 1959 team was inducted into the Hall of Fame, Joe remarked to a standing ovation, "There is no better time spent than with youth." In later years, Joe was inducted to the Hall of Fame for his personal achievements.
