Birth: Dec. 26, 1845
Adams County
Illinois, USA
Death: Apr. 12, 1936
Tulsa County
Oklahoma, USA

David was born in Quincy Adams, Co., Illinois. His family moved to Montague Co., Texas when he was young somewhere around the late 1850's. As a young boy he played with the Comanche Indian boys and learned their ways and secrets. He became a Texas Ranger Scout and later a Texas Ranger. They used him as a scout because of his knowledge he had about the Comanches. On the 22 Dec 1863 his Mother and some of his siblings were killed in a Comanche and Kiowa raid which took place at Illinois Bend, Montague Co.,Texas. The incident was
referred to as the Illinois Bend Massacre in which quite a few settlers were killed and the Comanches continued the raid well into Cooke County, Texas.

The place they lived was named Illinois Bend because most of the people that moved there were from Adams Co., Illinois. David served in the Texas Rangers under his Uncle George Washington Campbell until the late 1870's.

David first married a Elzira Watley. I do not know what happened to her after they were married in 1873 in Cooke Co., Texas....He later married my ggreat Grandmother Sarah Matilda Higgins. Apparently he moved back to Adams Co., Illinois sometime around 1880 as I find him and Sarah living in Ursa, Adams Co., Illinois. They later moved to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), then to Guthrie, Logan Co., Oklahoma and they finally ended up in Tulsa, Oklahoma where they are both buried. His obituary stated he was a Pioneer Cattleman and a Texas Ranger. I found his interview to the Tulsa World in which he told of the ordeal with the Comanches killing his Mother and some of his Family. This man was a brave man and a Texas Hero....
