Gene Barnes passed away peacefully in his home on Dec. 11, 2010, with his family by his side. His last words were "tell everyone I love them."
Born in St. Francis, Kansas, Gene moved to Yamhill during his 8th grade year, attending Yamhill Grade School and Yamhill-Carlton High School. After high school (1953), he joined the Navy where he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Pat Baker. Together they raised three children.
In his youth Gene was quite athletic and was voted Mr. Atlas of his high school. He was also a star pitcher. Gene was an avid fisherman and loved spending time on the ocean with his friends. He was a talented individual who excelled at anything he tried to do. He loved rock hunting and golfing. His greatest passion was his family. He was a founder of the little league program in the 60's wanting the children of Yamhill to have something positive to do.
In 1959, Gene purchased and operated Gene's Barber Shop which he ran for 45 years. Known as a popular hangout in Yamhill, his sense of humor, witty comments and unique personality made Gene's barbershop a fun and comfortable place to visit. Gene prided himself in never raising his prices, making it affordable for everyone in his community. In addition to the barber shop, he was Yamhill's rural mail carrier. He was also a volunteer fireman in Yamhill for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pat Barnes, his daughter Lonnie Adams (Keith) of Yamhill, daughter Linda Shutts (Larry) of McMinnville and son Ken Barnes of Louisiana. He leaves one brother Ted Barnes, a half brother and sister, Alvin and Beverly Lambrecht. He was preceded in death by his older brother Bill Barnes and his grandson Dustin Barnes.
He deeply loved his grandchildren, Mike(Jenni), Kelly (Sarah), Brad and Kyle Adams, Shelley (Stephen) Weise, Greg, Matt, Phadre and Jessie Shutts, Damon Barnes, Rod and Wade Atkinson and Whitney Fortune. His great-grandchildren Journey and Legacy Adams, Grady and Owen Weise, Taylor and Dylan Barnes, Renner, Aliya, Ada and Phoenix Clary.
Gene was a generous and caring person well known for his wonderful sense of humor. He is best described by his grandchildren as "One of a Kind".
