MARIANNA -- Four members of a six-member Marianna family were killed and three persons injured in a grinding head-on collision on a narrow dirt road just south of Kynesville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The injured persons were sent to hospitals as far away as Tallahassee and were reported in "fair" to "serious" condition Tuesday night.
Those killed were a man, his wife and two teenage daughters. They were identified by the Florida Highway Patrol officers as Norman Ira Porter, 51, Edna Branning Porter, 39, Crystelle Porter, 12, and Christine Porter, 16, all of Rt. 4, Marianna.
Also injured in the late Monday night wreck was six-year-old Otis Jewell, a nephew of the mother. The boy was reported in "fair" condition Tuesday night though his condition had been listed as critical late Monday night, when he was transferred from Jackson County Hospital to Tallahassee.
Two other men, who were in the car that hit the Porter car head-on on the narrow dirt road were listed in "serious" condition in the Jackson County Hospital Tuesday night.
The two men were identified as Troy Ezell Barnes, 30, of Cottondale and Darrell Benefield of Round Lake. Benefield's age was not available.
Highway Patrol troopers who investigated the accident said the two cars collided at the top of a small hill on the road, where they said there is not enough room for two cars to pass.
According to reports filed, the drivers spotted each other near the hill, and both of the cars began skidding.
The Porter car skidded a total of 71 feet, according to reports, and the Barnes car skidded a total of 75 feet before impact.
Troopers said charges in the accident are pending.
