Obituary; Leona May Cusick, by Ralph G. Shipley.
Leona May Cusick was born October 3, 1893 in Forward Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, the first of 10 children of Chester P. and Caroline Hutzley Andrew. Leona was educated in the Penn Township High School of Butler County and in the Lucy Webb Hayes National Training School of Washington, D.C. On September 14, 1921 she was united in marriage to Charles L. Cusick at Evans City, Pennsylvania. From this union were born three children who survive her: Mary Louise Myers, of Decatur, Illinois; Gwendolyn Force of Canton, Ohio; and Charles W. Cusick of Clairton, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by six grandchildren. Leona May Cusick served for five years as a deaconess in the Irene Martland Deaconess Home in New Castle, Pennsylvania and taught Mission Kindergarten in Simpson, Grace and Italian Methodist Churches of New Castle, Pennsylvania prior to her marriage. As the faithful wife of a United Methodist pastor, she served her family, her church and her Lord as a complement to the ministry of her husband, The Rev. Charles L. Cusick until his retirement in 1960. This writer was privileged to be her pastor while Mrs. Cusick was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church (Allegheny County) near Clairton, Pennsylvania. Here I witnessed her untiring devotion to her husband who was hospitalized for several years at the Veteran's Administration Hospital, Aspinwall, Pennsylvania, and her simultaneous devotion to the work, mission and ministry of the church. Wherever she went she carried a bit of cheer and a lot of love. Her husband, The Rev. Charles L. Cusick passed away June 21, 1964. Only then did she cease the difficult weekly trips to Aspinwall from her home in Baldwin Boro near Pittsburgh. In December 1973 she became a resident of the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Home where she continued to be in mission until her death January 7, 1982. Services were held January 11, 1982 at the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Home's Baum Chapel with Rev. Merle Silvis conducting services, and Rev. H.P. Albright of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church conducting graveside services. Leona Cusick's body was laid to rest in the Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania. Most assuredly she continues, as was her earthly habit, to love and serve her Lord.
