Biography by Diana Druback

Stephen "Steve" Balogh was born in about 1909 in Romania. His parents were Joseph Balogh and Rose Komaroni. He married Catherine Druzbacky (1906-1996) on June 3, 1933 at the Municipal Building in Manhattan, New York. Catherine was an immigrant from Slovakia. At the time of their marriage, Steve was living at 2025 Lafontaine Avenue in the Bronx, New York. He was twenty-four years old and a watchmaker by trade. In 1982 and 1983, Catherine related the following story about her husband Steve and her. They had both entered the United States illegally from Canada. Steve had originally sailed to Cuba and then went to Calgary, Canada and crossed into the United States at Niagara Falls. Catherine had sailed into Quebec, Canada, arriving on May 24, 1929 on the S.S. Montcalm from Hamburg, Germany and she also crossed into the United States illegally. In 1937, Steve and Catherine were both deported from the United States. They were put on the MS Batory to make the trip to Gdynia, a Polish port city. During the voyage Steve became missing and the officials believed he had fallen or jumped overboard. Catherine remembered him being very distraught about being deported, so it seemed plausible that he had jumped overboard. To date, their United States deportation records and their incoming passenger ship records for Gdynia, Poland have not been located. In 1938, Catherine Balogh was able to reenter the United States legally. She sailed from LaHavre, France on the S.S. Alaunia and arrived in New York on December 26th. She married Zoltan Varjassy, and she died on October 21, 1996 in New Jersey.
