Carl H. Bartels age 90 of Maquoketa Iowa died on Sunday evening December 9, 2007 at the Maquoketa Care Center in Maquoketa Iowa.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday December 13, 2007 from the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa with Pastor Judy Heinrich officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Wednesday December 12,2007 from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Burial will be in the Buckhorn Cemetery rural Maquoketa Iowa where full military rites will be conducted by the Lost Nation American Legion Menzo Widle Post #381.

Carl H. Bartels was born on August 21 1917 in Jackson County Iowa to Henry Bartels and Christina (Behrens) Bartels. He was educated at the Touser Country School in rural Jackson County. He then attended Baldwin High School. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He married Catherine L. Kedley in 1957 in Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 1 1982. He married Kathryn Kit Bowman Hoyer on May 30 1987 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Carl H. Bartels first worked as a cream hauler for the Buckhorn Creamery and then for Edwards Implement in Baldwin Iowa for a couple of years. He then farmed for many years near Nashville Iowa and did mechanic work moving to Maquoketa in 1987.

Carl was a member of the Lost Nation American Legion Menzo Widle Post #381 Maquoketa VFW Post #3633 O'Connor-Regenwether and the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. He also was a member of the Knights of Pythians Lodge in Maquoketa, Lasso E Camping Club and the Joinerville Boat Club.

Carl enjoyed fishing camping woodworking visiting with family and playing cards especially Euchre and Sheepshead.

Carl is survived by: his wife- Kathryn Kit Bartels of Maquoketa, I0wa; step-daughters- Karen (Bob) Will of Coal City IL & Shelia Ziemba of St. Charles MO; 6 nieces & nephews including 2 whom he raised- Donald Bartels of Baldwin IA & Dean Bartels of Baldwin IA; 4 step-grandchildren 14 step-great-grandchildren & 2 step-great-great-grandchildren; & a sister- Irene Thordsen of Monmouth IA. He was preceded in death by his parents his first wife a brother- Harry a sister- Velma Yarolem 1 step-granddaughter & 1 step-great-grandson.
