BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Mrs. Edward Berkfield, mother- in-law of Indiana University President Elvis J. Stahr, died today at Bloomington Hospital She was 77.

Mrs. Berkfield, the former Ethlynn Simmons of Cooperstown, N.Y., and lived here since 1964. She was visiting her daughter Thursday night when she became ill.

Mrs. Berkfield married the late Edward Berkfield in 1914 and lived in Manhattan, N. Y for half a century. Berkfield, an executive of the "National Steel Corp., died in 1958.

Funeral Set
For Monday

Bloomington, Ind. -- Mrs. Ethlynn Berkfield, 77 years old, Bloomington, mother-in-law of Indiana University President Elvis J. Stahr, died yesterday in Bloomington Hospital.

A resident here since February, 1964, Mrs. Berkfield had lived in New York City more than 50 years.

Her husband, the late Edward Berkfield, was an executive with the National Steel Corporation. He died in 1958.

A former Latin teacher and pianist, Mrs. Berkfield was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Day Funeral Home here. Burial arrangements are incomplete.

Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Elvis J. Stahr, a brother, Carl Simmons of Sommerville, N.J. and three grandchildren.
