David H. Berard, 78, of Lake Vermilion-Tower and formerly of Des Moines and Iowa City, Iowa, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Dec. 16, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Ralph O. and Ruth E. (Houghton) Berard. David served in the Army in the late 1950s. In Des Moines, he was self-employed as a manufacturer's representative and later worked for Economy Forms Corp. as a purchasing agent. He and his family moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where he was the owner/operator of the Pronto Convenience Store in Coralville. David was involved in both the Boy Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls when his children were young; and was very active in the Soap Box Derby. He served as the Scoutmaster for Scout Troop 77 in Des Moines, and was a member of the Acanthus Masonic Lodge 632 A.F. & A.M. in Des Moines. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, fishing and being outdoors. David's two great loves were his family and time spent on Lake Vermilion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Stanley Berard; and two of his dearest friends, Larry Cassaday and Jack Rogers.
