He was the son of Aaron and Mary Dillie. They were the first residents of Jefferson Township in Jay County Indiana. They had moved there from Morgan county, Ohio when they purchased federal land. They later left Jay County for federal land in Allen County.

Harrison lived in Randolph County with his brother A.J. in the 1860 census. He married Angeline Thornburg on Nov. 3, 1860 in Windsor, Randolph County.

Harrison served as a member of CO G 54TH Indiana Regt, Vol Infantry during the Civil War, mostly during the campaign for Vicksburg under Gen. Sherman. His brother, Andrew Jackson "A.J." Dillie served with him and was wounded at Chickasaw Bayou on Dec. 28, 1862. He was sent up river where he died of his wounds at Paducah, Kentucky. Harrison's only other brother, George Washington Dillie served with Co. C, 35th Illinois Regiment, 14th Infantry and died from wounds that he received at Chickamauga.

William Henry Harrison Dillie received a pension for his service related illness starting in 1889. In his applications, "Dillie" was spelled nine different ways and he used a wide variety of birth years. He was born sometime between 1833 and 1840! The 1900 census listed April 1836 and that was one of the dates he used on pension applications.
