James Warner Nolan, the fourth child of eight, was born to Patrick Nolan and Ellen Warner Nolan on 18 January 1883 on the family farm in Hamden, Connecticut. He worked hard on the farm at an early age, as did his parents and siblings. Feeding a family of 10 off of land that grew more rocks than vegetables was a challenge. In his late 20’s he met Agnes Josephine Sommer on a trip to the beach in Woodmont, Connecticut. The farm boy met the city girl and they fell in love. During their courtship, Jim worked hard as a tractor salesman saving enough money to start an artesian well drilling business. Jim and Agnes married on 26 Oct 1914 in Brooklyn, NY and settled down in West Haven. Five years later, they welcomed George Sommer Nolan, their only son. into the world. George was born at home in their apartment above Silver’s Drug Store in West Haven. Under the supervision of his brother Father Francis P. Nolan the Civil Engineer graduate from Yale, Jim built a bungalow on New Haven Avenue in Woodmont in 1920. On 17 Jul 1922, Jim was sworn into the Woodmont Volunteer Fire Department. Together Jim and Agnes created a bucolic home life for young George. Jim served as a Burgess in Woodmont Borough governemnt. Jim worked hard in his prosperous, but physically demanding business. In the bitter winter of 1933 Jim contracted pneumonia for the third time and it took his life on 5 Feb 1933. He was buried in St. Mary Cemetery in Hamden, Connecticut. Agnes, the grieving widow, sold their beloved bungalow, collected her husband’s business debts and moved in with her parents in Milford. She taught 5th grade to support herself and her son. He was always “my Jim” when Agnes, spoke of her late husband, her affection for him never waned.
