DONALD PRASCH
FEB 25, 1932 -- JUN 6, 2011

Donald Joseph Prasch, 79, passed away at Balboa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in San Diego on June 6th, 2011 after years of declining health. He was born in Burlington, Wisconsin on February 25th, 1932 to Edmund and Cordella Prasch. His family moved to Vallejo, California during WWII and then to a farm in Wamic, Oregon where he graduated high school from St. Mary's Academy in Dalles, Oregon. Possessed with a sky high IQ, Don picked up all academic subjects with little effort. His teachers found it difficult to find new challenges for him throughout his school years.

Don joined the Air Force in 1950 and was stationed in the Philippines during the Korean War as an air traffic controller/radar specialist until 1954. He greatly enjoyed the many places around the world he visited during his time in the military.

He began attending college in 1955 at Portland State and graduated from University of Washington in 1958 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He took a job working for the Federal Reserve Bank in Portland soon after college.

Don married Ferriel McKinney in 1961 and they settled in the Portland area before relocating to Moraga, California. They later moved to nearby Pleasant Hill where the young couple had their first home built. He taught for the Moraga school district in the late 1960's after obtaining his teaching credential.

After their children were born, the desire to open an ice cream store lead the family to Modesto, California. They opened a Baskin Robbins store and managed it for many years in the 1970's. In the late 1970's and early 80's, Don worked as a real estate broker in the Modesto/Tracy, California area. He spent later years in Palm Springs before settling in San Diego the last 15 years of his life. He had a lifelong love of science fiction, James Bond films, world history, classical music was a voracious reader. He took up jogging in the late 1960's long before it was popular. His quick wit, insights and sense of humor were legendary.

He is survived by his daughter, Marie Brady of Oakland, CA, his son-in-law, David and his two beloved grandsons, Evan and Nolan Brady; his son Richard and family; his sister Patricia Belden and brother-in-law Ernest of Napa, California; sister Eunice Starr of Vashon, Washington; sister Susan Walters of Tacoma, WA, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his ex-wife, Ferriel McKinney Prasch; his parents, Cordella and Edmund Prasch and brother-in-laws, Dan Starr and Harold Walters. He also will be missed by his best friend, Dante Amoraoso, who kept him company almost everyday during his years confined to a nursing home.

A private service in Portland, Oregon will be held in the near future. Dad loved dogs and especially adored his dog Coco. Donations in his name may be made to Second Chance Dog Rescue, 2435 C. St. Suite 2, San Diego, CA 92102. www.modbee.com/obituaries
