Mr. Francis V. Stuart, aged 86 of Olmsted Falls, Ohio passed away at his home on April 22, 2009 after a courageous battle with heart disease. Mr. Stuart was born in Spencer Township, Medina County, Ohio on January 17, 1923. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1942 and was soon drafted into the Army. He finished basic training in California and was shipped out to Guadalcanal in the South Pacific, serving as a sergeant in World War II with a squad of ten men that transported munitions from delivery ships to the shore.

One day in January of 1945, Sgt. Stuart and three other soldiers drove a jeep to the other side of the island and were to return in time for him to accompany his squad to the ship that evening. Upon his return, a tie-rod broke on the jeep. After over an hour a repair was made and they returned to their post. But the launch had left 3 minutes earlier leaving Sgt. Stuart behind. That night, January 29, 1945, the Coast Guard ship USS Serpens exploded killing all but 2 of 250 military personnel. Sgt. Stuart had lost all of his men. The remains of the sailors and soldiers were buried on Guadalcanal. In the early 1950s their remains were brought back to the United States and buried in Arlington National Cemetery. A six-sided white marble tombstone marks their graves.

After returning home in August of 1945, he was signed by the Cleveland Indians as a pitcher and spent two weeks with their minor league team at Norfolk, Virginia. An arm injury ended his career in professional baseball and he returned home to Spencer. He worked for a dry cleaning business before joining Columbia Gas, where he worked for 37 years, rising to the position of division plant supervisor. He was a member of the Spencer Methodist Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School for 25 years. He was also a member the Spencer American Legion and the Spencer, Black River and Medina County Boards of Education. He also helped found the Hot Stove League in the 1950s; baseball for young boys, that at one time flourished in Lorain and Medina counties. He loved playing sports and later watching the sports in which his children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces participated.

After retirement from Columbia Gas in 1983, he and his wife moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he was active in golf and beach walking. He also coached a baseball team at the Mayport Navy Base in Jacksonville, Florida. In 2006 he and his wife returned to Ohio.

Francis V. Stuart is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Janice L. (Tomasheski/Marincin) his beloved son Francis M. Stuart (Penny Maroldo), of Oberlin; daughter, Gail L. Lacerna (Dr. Rogener "Joe"), of Elyria; Stephanie (Marincin) Nichols (Tim), of Olmsted Falls and Kimberly (Marincin) Kilibarda, of Munster, Indiana; brother Lyle (Shirley) Stuart of Spencer, OH and Venice, FL. Mr. Stuart's passing also leaves behind 13 cherished grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Janice C. (nee Moore) in 1980; daughter, Laura Lee Cope (Robert) in 1988; four sisters and five brothers; his parents Cort and Alta (McDonald) Stuart.
