On June 9, 2016, Jerold Arthur Sherry 57, passed away just three weeks short of his 58th birthday after a short battle following complications from surgery.

Jerry was born July 2, 1958 in Yakima, Washington to Alfred and Lillian Sherry. He spent his childhood in the valley attending local schools, Hoover Elementary, Wilson Junior High and graduated from Eisenhower High in 1976.

Following high school he enlisted in the Air Force. In 1983, while at Edwards Air Force base in southern California he met and married his first wife, Paula Hakes. They had two daughters, Tiffani and Kristen. In 1984, he was stationed at Incirlik Air Force base in Turkey. The family lived there and returned to the states at the end of 1986. He was then stationed at Nellis Air Force base in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was honorably discharged while at Nellis and began attending school to become a mechanical draftsman. Jerry was proud of his military career but was more proud of his father’s and spoke of it often. He was hired by Boeing Company in 1989, and the family moved to Seattle. He spent over twenty years as a Quality Assurance Inspector for Boeing until health problems forced his early retirement. He was a workaholic who would work double shifts frequently and triple shifts around the holidays so others could spend time with their families. Jerry spent many years single until a whim sent him to Match.com where he met his soul mate Rachel Sisco in 2007. On their second date he asked her “what are you doing for the next twenty years?” They married January 17, 2009, and spent nine very happy years together.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Lillian Sherry and an infant sister in 1943. He is survived by his wife Rachel Sherry of Everett, daughters Tiffani Coukalas of Las Vegas, Nevada and Kristen Sherry of Portland, Oregon, sister Judy Leavitt and brother James (Jim) of Yakima, sister Jeanne Cunningham of Layton, Utah, nieces Jill Deathridge, Erika Brule and Linda Leavitt of Yakima and nephews Joe Sherry of Yakima and David Cunningham of Layton, Utah.

“Dad there was a special quote we would say to each other I will never forget: “any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a daddy.” Your daughter, Kristen.

My uncle Jerry was the greatest uncle and godfather. I will miss him very much. Your niece, Jill

“He was one of the hardest working men I have ever known and he taught me a lot.” Your nephew, Joe.

“Uncle Jerry, out of all the memories I have of you throughout my life, the ones I will cherish most are the past three weeks we were able to spend with you. Playing catch with you in your room, watching you dance to your favorite country song, joking about the “dive” motel next to the hospital and you wanting mom and I to just sit and hold your hand: these are the moments I will hold in my heart forever.” Your niece, Linda.

“Jerry, you were the baby and being twelve years older it was my job to take care of you. I played second mom for many years until we both moved on. Someone else is taking care of you now. Keep an eye on us and we’ll see you soon.” Your sister, Judy.

To Jerry from your brother Jim: “As kids we lived together. We fought. We laughed. We cried. We did not always show the love that we both had inside. We have shared good times and bad. All these memories are what bond me now to you. We grew to find love that is very strong today. It’s a love shared by family that will never fade away. You are my brother not by choice but by nature of our birth. I could not have chosen a better one. You are the best on earth. Thank you for being my brother. Rest in peace. Heaven is now your home.”

“I will always remember a childhood event when older brother Jim, after watching mom do her gardening, decided his little brother needed some growing and sat him down on the ground and using his baby shovel covered him in dirt. It must have worked; Jerry grew up to be a special man.” Your sister, Jeanne.

Our husband, father, brother and uncle is now gone. The four “J’s” are now three. We all loved you so much “Jer-Bear”. You will be missed.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 16 at 11:00 am at Calvary Cemetery in Yakima. Jerry’s remains will be buried with his parents.
