In 1860, he was a day laborer living with his family in Guilford Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg August 1, 1863, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 4 as a private with Co. L, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). Falling ill, he was furloughed home where he died from a disease described variously as chronic diarrhea, typhoid fever, and consumption.
