Half-sister Ruby Louise and half-brother Lawrence Ronald joined their father Guy Arthur and stepmother M. Grace Crist Hamm in welcoming their new baby half-sister, Mary Leona, into the world.

Born February 25, 1928, Mary Leona was named after her mother, her paternal grandmother (Mary Jane Eckard Hamm), and a college friend of Grace's named Leona. [They had promised each other, in college, to name their first daughters after each other. It is also possible that Grace Hamm "hedged the bet", in this situation, by naming her first daughter for both of them at once!] While she was the third child, and second daughter, of Guy Arthur Hamm, Mary Leona was the eldest child of Mary Grace (Crist) Hamm.

§":*´'³¤³´'*:"§"†"§":*´'³¤³´'*:"§

Mary's first and middle names were, quite frequently, "run together" (into "Marileona"; pronounced "merrily-oh-nuh") and she was also frequently referred to strictly by her initials "ML". But the most endearing "nickname" Mary had was "Aunt Oni" (pronouned "oh-knee"; see Genesis 35:18; however there were various spellings used. Her nephews and nieces could not say "Marileona".)

§":*´'³¤³´'*:"§"†"§":*´'³¤³´'*:"§

It was Mary, moreso than her elder half-sister Ruby, or her elder half-brother Lawrence, who helped her parents welcome her three youngest siblings, Leta Elvira, Ray William, and Iladora May into the world. This was not due to any malice on the parts of Ruby, nor of Lawrence; it was more a matter of "no longer living in the same house". By the time Leta was born Ruby was already married to Virgil Royce Reed; and by the time Ray was born Ruby and Virgil had a child (DeEtta) of their own. Ray was "born an uncle" (to DeEtta Reed) and Iladora was "born an aunt" (to DeEtta, Joyce and Larry Reed).

§":*´'³¤³´'*:"§"†"§":*´'³¤³´'*:"§

It could reasonably be stated that Mary never really "got over" the death of her brother Carroll. She passed away the day after what would have been his 51st birthday.
