Russell was known to many as Doodle or Pop. He was employed with Wonder Bread Company for many years, and with East Coast Gas Company, both in Charlottesville.
Surviving are his wife, Debra Gentry Hammer; his son, Brian S. Hammer and wife, Chanel, of Ruckersville; two grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Offenbacker and Ethel Hammer; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Samuel, Nelson, Robert and John Hammer, and a sister, Louise Herring.
Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Josh Shifflett, will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
