Virgie McKinney Long, 83, of Richmond, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Baptist Health – Lexington.
She was born April 6, 1932, at Red House, Kentucky in Madison County to Virgil and Hattie Harris McKinney, both of whom preceded her in death. Virgie was the widow of James Matthew Long. She had worked in her early years at Hinkle Drug Store and J.J. Newberry department store of Richmond, and for many years she was the bookkeeper for the family company, Long’s Plumbing. Most of her life was dedicated to being a housewife and mother. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends.
Virgie was a faithful servant of the Lord and a Christian witness to everyone she met. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she formerly taught Sunday school. She was also a former Sunday school teacher and the Secretary-Treasurer of Valley View Baptist Church. Virgie enjoyed nature photography and was a proud writer of poetry.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammy Simpson (Tim) and Dr. Gina Land (Robert) both of Richmond; two grandchildren Ethan Matthew Simpson (Ashley) and Jamie Michelle Land; one great grandson, Colton Matthew Simpson; She also leaves one brother, Ray McKinney (Marie) and one sister, Thelma Christopher, both of Richmond and several nieces and nephews.
Virgie was preceded in death by two brothers, Turner and Leighton McKinney and three sisters, Evelyn Stevens, Gladys Winkler and Faye Shanks.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2015, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Pastor Joey Kays and Pastor Bobby Greene officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 – 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Ethan Simpson, Bruce Roberts, Gordon Philpot, Phil Foster, Harold Mason and Virgil Brown.
