(Photo) Robert Jacob Cassel, 73, of Le Mars, went to the arms of Jesus on May 3, 2007, while in Japan visiting his daughter Rachael.
"Red" as he was known, was born June 15, 1933, in Danville, Ill., the son of John and Victoria (Koziol) Cassel. He graduated from Schlarman Roman Catholic High School in Danville, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He married Phyllis Ann Razaitis at St. Peter and Paul's Church in Westville, Ill., on Sept. 3, 1955, after she graduated from Lakeview School of Nursing.
They moved to Downers Grove in the Chicago area, where he trained as a court reporter.
In 1959, when Red accepted a position as official court reporter for the Third Judicial District of Iowa, the family moved first to Primghar, and then in 1968, to Le Mars. Red was also president of Cassel, Inc., Court Reporting in Sioux City, operating it successfully from 1967 until his retirement in 2004. At the time of his death, he was employed at the local radio station, KLEM in Le Mars.
Red loved God, his family and his country. Over the course of several years, he and his beloved bride fostered more than 30 children in their home.
He was very involved in promoting the profession of court reporting and helped start a reporting program at Teikyo Westmar University in Le Mars.
He was an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer for children's and foster children's school functions. He made it a point to attend the many activities of his 18 grandchildren, and he was much loved by them and a multitude of friends.
Red is survived by his five daughters, Mary Anne Meyer and her husband, Leroy of Vermillion, S.D., Rebecca Vornbrock of Le Mars, Rachael Donovan and her husband, Kevin, of Sagamihara, Japan, Susan Davis and her husband, Scott of DeWitt, and Melanie Liebsack and her husband, David, of Sioux City, and their families; a sister, Mary Toby and her husband Keith of Jacksonville, Ill.; a brother Larry and his wife, Judy, and his stepmother, Louise Cassel Busch of Danville, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his beloved bride Phyllis; his parents; his brothers, Dan and Jackie; and a grandson, Jacob Donovan.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Feuerstein Funeral Home of Le Mars is assisting the family with arrangements.
