Birth: Jun. 3, 1754
Harlingen
Somerset County
New Jersey, USA
Death: May 29, 1813
Adams County
Pennsylvania, USA

Stone is broken. Cannot read dates on stone in 2004. Historian Arthur Weaner of Weaner Road, Gettysburg, provided an old transcript of the cemetery in September 2011 which included the death date of 29 May 1813 and stated George was 59 years 11 months 26 days at death, which calculates to birthdate: 3 June 1754. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

The Gettysburg Times in 1960 did a series called "A Bit of History About Early Settlers" focused on the "Upper" (Northern) Low Dutch settlers, copying obits from the "Adams Sentinel" files. Sacred to the memory of George Bercaw, died 29 May 1813 aged 59 years, 11 months, and 26 days. That confirms the dates above. The newspaper said "Heirs and legal representatives of George Bercaw, Senior, deceased twit: George Bercaw (jr,since deceased) died leaving issue names unknown to petitioner…, Maria Bercaw intermarried with Garret Vamarsdalle; Margaret Bercaw intermarried with Isaac Montfort…; John Bercaw, William Bercaw ad Abraham Bercaw."

George Brokaw's will calls him of 'Straban Twp.' " and named his wife Nelly and six children:
George,
Polly (Maria);
Margaret;
John;
William and
Abraham.
Executors were his sons William and Abraham and his brother-in-law, Cornelius Lott."  (Adams Co., Pa. Wills, v. C., p. 96)  B

According to the book "Our Brokaw/Bragaw Heritage" by Elsie Foster, George married Eleanor "Nelly" Vanderbilt and died in 1819. George and Eleanor had seven children baptised in the Conewago church. George was a Revolutionary War vet.

There has been much confusion over the years about the two cemeteries which are only a few miles apart, but this Northern LD burial ground was next to the church so most of the Low Dutch burials are here.

A descendant wrote that both George and Eleanor (who d. at 74 y, 1 m, 23 dys.) are buried in the Low Dutch Cem., about 2 miles from Hunterstown, Pa.; her footstone is beside his, marked E.B.
