"New Buffalo - Mrs. Catherine Handwork died last Saturday from the effects of a stroke of paralysis, aged 83 years and eight months. She was conscious until the last, conversing with those about her. For the past four years she was nearly blind, but she bore her affliction without a murmur. Her husband, Daniel Handwork, died a score of years ago. Her funeral occurred Tuesday, services being held at the Reformed church north of Canfield, of which she had long been a consistent member. Rev. Lauffer pronounced the sermon before a large concourse of relatives and friends. Interment in the German cemetery."

Comment: Daniel and Catherine Handwork raised Leanda Shoemaker
JOHN MEGOWN, b March 13, 1827. (see pg 62 for more information on John & Leanda (Shoemaker) Megown
Written by Melvin L. Megown in 1984).
"His first 7 years were spent living on his family's farm in Butler Co., PA. He witnessed a great meteor shower in the fall of 1833. In 1836, the family relocated to New Brighten, Beaver Co., PA. He became a bricklayer, working with his father and brothers in a brickyard they owned at the mouth of Lacock Run on the Beaver River. In 1858, he went to Mahoning Co., OH, to do brickwork for an oil refinery. He met Leanda Shoemaker, who's foster parents Daniel and Catherine Handwork owned the land the refinery was being built. John and Leanda were married on Feb. 20, 1862. (She was born on Aug. 30, 1836. The daughter of Joshua and Maria (Stitler) Shoemaker. Her mother died when Leanda was 6, and she was sent to live with the Handworks) John and Leanda moved into a house on Mill St. that John had built. In 1880 John secured work in a shipyard in Arundel, MD. They lived on a 365 acre farm. In 1891 the family returned to Youngstown. Leanda died on Nov. 16, 1899, after a long illness. John died from the effects of a stroke on July 12, 1910, both are buried at Oak Hill Cem. Youngstown, OH. They had 7 children."
