OBITUARY-LAKE CITY REPORTER- FEBRUARY, 1924
Nearly seventy years ago Miss Isabella Proctor of St. Mary's Ga. was married to Mr Giles Tompkins of Lake City, FL. The young couple came to Columbia County and settled about seven miles west of Lake City.
Mrs. Tompkins was a pioneer homemaker. We, in this day, cannot know of the privations and hardships women endured at that time. She was the mother of ten children all of whom she lived to see grown and settled in life. During the war between the states, when her husband was in Virginia fighting for the lost cause, she had the management of the farm and the care of her children, wholly dependent upon her.
She ruled her household wisely and her children rise up and call her blessed. Her home was always the center of hospitality, and many now living can recall pleasant hours spent with her.
About 3 years ago her husband died and since that time she made her home with her son, Mr John Tompkins, at Leesburg, FL. Over a year ago Mrs. Tompkins fell breaking her hip and shoulder. The doctors said she would never walk again, but her indomitable will and constitution was stronger than they thought, for she recovered and was able to walk.
The years told on her at last and she began to fail several weeks ago, gradually grew weaker, and on February 21 she passed to her rest. Her body was brought to Lake City on February 22, and laid beside her husband.
Her children and grandchildren even to the 5th generation came from far and near to pay their last respects to "Grandma." She is gone but not forgotten and her influence will live forever. From such mothers as her come our best ciitzens.
The deceased was 87 years of age. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. C. Calhoun, pastor of the Methodist Church of which she was a faithful member. The children surviving her are: Giles Tompkins of Lake City, John W. Tompkins of Leesburg, L. O. Tompkins of Jacksonville, Percy Tompkins of Bunnell, Alvah Tompkins of Brooklyn, N..Y., and Mrs. O. J. Jackson of Manning, FL.
