Phyllis May Prettyman Konzack, the daughter of Glen and Ellen H. (Westergren) Ashley, was born May 15, 1928 in Harlan County, near Ragan, Nebraska. She departed this life on Friday, March 6, 1998 at her home north of Guide Rock, Nebraska at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 19 days.
Phyllis attended rural Harlan County schools and graduated from the Ragan High School in 1947, with a certificate in normal training. At the completion of her formal education, she taught rural school near Ragan. She was married to Glenn W. Prettyman in April of 1949. This union was blessed with four children. They lived at Ragan and later moved to Alma to make their home until divorcing in 1958.
Three years later, she moved to Guide Rock and spent the rest of her life with Owen D. Konzack. For a number of years, Phyllis was employed as the cook at the Guide Rock cafe, later with the Guide Rock Public School, and then with the Green Thumb program at the nutrition center. An exceptional baker, she will long be remembered for her tasteful cooking skills, her bread, rolls and pies. She possessed a strong work ethic and was happiest when she was busy. In her leisure time she relaxed working crossword puzzles and helping whenever called upon by family and friends. She especially enjoyed her membership with the Guide Rock Rebekah Lodge #180.
She was preceded in death by her father and eldest sister, Merle Motley.
Left to treasure her memory are her husband, Owen Konzack of Guide Rock; her mother Ellen Ashley of Alma; children: Patricia Parrish of Universal City, Texas, Karen Prettyman of Inavale, David Prettyman of Mesa, Arizona, Ramona Prettyman of Santa Monica, California, and John Konzack of Holdrege; sisters: Estella and Ardith Ashley, and LaDonna Schluterbusch of Alma; brothers: John Ashley of Holdrege, and Anders Ashley of Alma; grandchildren: Troy and Christopher Parrish, Jeremy Prettyman, Quest Prettyman, Jayme Schroeder, and Joel and Jennifer Konzack; and a great grandson, Brandon Schroeder; other relatives and her many friends.
